The 17 Year Reset: What 17 Years in London Taught Me About Rebuilding

The past can leave lasting marks without being allowed to write the rest of your life. This is why I am choosing movement, useful work and a new chapter before I turn 40.

Paolo Barranca on The Road to 40

My name is Paolo Barranca. I am Italian, I live in London, and I have spent the last 17 years living in the United Kingdom.

When the past leaves a mark

My early life included family disruption, mistakes, difficult circumstances and consequences that affected friendships and my family’s trust. I do not share that history to excuse anything or ask for sympathy. I share it because difficult chapters can shape us without having to define everything that follows.

What the United Kingdom gave me

The United Kingdom gave me the opportunity to rebuild, learn and grow. London is where I became an adult, worked across different roles, learned new skills and languages, and built a stable life. I am grateful to this country, to the people I met and to myself for continuing through difficult years. Now I want to carry that knowledge forward and use it to contribute to people, communities and useful projects in other places.

Why I am beginning alone

What happened in my earlier life left lasting marks. At times I have chosen solitude because letting people close can feel risky when you have been hurt before. I will begin this journey alone, but I do not want it to be a story about isolation. I hope the road helps me reconnect with people, trust and possibility. Perhaps I will even meet someone with whom to share part of the next chapter. That is a hope, not an expectation. The journey is ultimately about moving forward without allowing the past to decide the rest of my life.

Movement, not escape

The Road to 40 is not an attempt to run from the past. It is a decision to stop postponing the future. Travel is not a cure and it is not a replacement for professional mental health support. I see it as a way to create perspective, practise openness and build a healthier, more sustainable way of living and working.

Making the journey useful

I plan to document the journey on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and this website. I will continue working remotely, building AI and digital prototypes and developing a location independent business. The model is simple: travel creates content, content builds an audience, useful ideas can become client prototypes, and earned revenue can support more travel.

Finding my creativity again

After years of rebuilding, I have found my way back to myself and to creativity. I have been creating content and streaming since I was young, and I still love filming, editing and turning ideas into things people can see and use. Today I use modern digital and AI tools to create websites and interactive prototypes. During the journey I want to keep creating, share practical knowledge and help people strengthen their online presence. I cannot promise that every idea will succeed, but I can help shape an idea, make a working version and identify a realistic next step.

I offer practical creative technology guidance based on my experience. If you have an idea, want to understand modern digital and AI tools or need help moving your online presence forward, email me and we can explore what is realistically possible.

A transparent public campaign

The public GoFundMe goal is £25,000. After transaction fees, 100% of net funds received supports the journey. The £25,000 budget is a current planning estimate for launch runway, not a claim that it funds the entire journey. No charity is currently associated with the fundraiser. Public donations remain separate from paid commercial prototype work.

What I hope someone takes from this

You can make mistakes, lose trust, feel isolated and still rebuild through accountability, work, learning and better decisions. That is the example I hope this journey can offer to a young person or anyone who believes it is too late to begin again.
